Since this pandemic started almost 2 years ago, we have been coaching remotely through telephone, Zoom and Facetime. The response has been overwhelming good. The family can choose a time when they are not busy with caregiving and can talk freely to their coach. We often found home visits inconvenient for the caregiver and disturbing to the family member with dementia. This presented two problems; the patient was bewildered hearing his caregiver talk about changes that he is not aware of, and the caregiver, for this reason, could not speak freely about challenges of care he needed help with.
I often wondered if telephone coaching would be as effective as face-to-face home visits. I visited a researcher who had been asking himself if telephone support could reduce the perceived burden of care. His longitudinal study of 20+ years has shown that telephone coaching is very effective. Our coaches have found that to be true.
This pandemic has allowed support to come into the home remotely when in-home coaching wasn't available or welcomed. So, some good has come out of this time.
