Who is left?
Wednesday, March 20, 2013
Today at team we looked at how the Virtual Dementia Tour depicted the plight of the person with dementia and compared it to John Zeisel's Hopeful Aging view. Zeisel appears to use the Montassori method of learning to bring out the best in the person with Alzheimer's disease. That person needs connection, a voice, choice and a feeling of physical, emotional and spiritual safety with the people he is relating to.
Lynn Serper uses those same needs in presenting her materials in The Serper Method (Google her and learn more...it is a fascinating method). She finds people with Alzheimer's disease enjoy learning when familiar material is presented with choices, safe connections and chance for their voice to be heard.
What do you think? Is there a whole person still there? Can he learn? Does he deserve to be heard? If you say yes to those questions you are well on your way to becoming a super care partner.
