Starting in the fall, StilMee will be offering what we call Dementia Family Forums at south shore area churches and councils on aging. The forum is a chance for families to get information about dementia care and have their many questions answered. There are 2 planned so far; one in Avon COA September 11th @ 5:30 and one at Braintree COA on October 28th @ 5. All are welcome.
In past forums we've done, participants have been pleased with the information given, especially about the importance of an early diagnosis and treatment, of ways to communicate with the person with dementia in a new way (it must be learned), and how to enjoy time together. I've had 2 family members with dementia and have helped hundreds of families navigate through the dementia maze. It has brought me the most pleasure I've ever had in my work as a nurse/counselor.
I'd recommend the Alzheimer Weekly e-newsletter to all. It has information about research, medications, latest trends in care and hope to stop this disease. Go to www.alzheimerweekly.com and sign up. Teepa Snow is often featured and has great advice on videos. This week's was explaining how the drugs act on the brain chemistry and function.
