6 Emotional Needs of People with Dementia
Friday, May 23, 2014
I attended a conference for professionals this past week. The keynote speaker was Mary Sharp from the Edcon Group. She reiterated many of the ways we here at StilMee have been teaching caregivers in their homes. The person with a cognitive disorder is different now, making education on how to keep in a vital relationship with the person essential. She talked about the 6 emotional needs of people with dementia taken from Tom Kilwood's book Dementia Reconsidered. The needs are : OCCUPATION, IDENTITY, COMFORT, INCLUSION, ATTACHMENT, all held together with love. Occupation means being involved, identity means being in touch with the past, comfort means soothing of pain, sorrow and anxiety, inclusion means to feel involved in life with others around who are important, attachment is a safety net when the world is full of uncertainty, love is the unconditional acceptance and wholehearted emotional giving of oneself without any expectation of direct reward. Oh if all caregivers would learn these lessons. Their family member would be happier, they would be feeling more satisfied with caring and relationships would thrive.
