A Day for the Caregiver
Wednesday, May 7, 2014
Recently I spoke at a caregiver conference in Plymouth for the South Shore Alzheimer Partnership. It was a wonderful experience; I felt one with the audience of 400 as if we were sitting across the kitchen table having a talk. In the other room massages, Reiki and other sensory pleasures were offered. Lunch was shared as caregivers rounded the many resource vendors that took part.
I spoke on CVS, a way of looking at caregiving someone with Alzheimer's or other cognitive disorder. The C for the care recipient stands for control. The person must feel he is in control of his life. The V stands for value. He needs to feel he is still valued as a person with a rich history and many remaining strengths. The S stands for safety; without physical and emotional safety, the person cannot be all he can be.
The caregiver needs CVS too. The C stands for confidence in controlling the disease and taking charge of the person's care. The V stands for the need for validation of a work that requires sacrifice and commitment. The S stands for satisfaction that she is making a difference.
When these are in place the journey through Alzheimer's can be the most satisfying experience. The caregiver is transformed in the journey. I know I have been.
