Managing Stress

As an Alzheimer caregiver you are called on to do many things you've never done before in the same way; manage doctors visits, learn new ways to relating to your family member with dementia, adjusting to the subtle and sometimes not too subtle changes as the disease progresses. You are also in a new role within the family. Do not try to handle it all alone. Find help.
Get informed; study about the disease before the changes take place.
Take time for yourself. Many caregivers get sick and some die long before the person with dementia does. This is due to the stress that caregiving puts on your body and mind.
Find help; a day program for him/her or a companion who can relieve you of having to structure each and every day.
Spend time with friends and other family in fun activities.
Exercise is a key to reducing stress. I try to walk 3-4 miles a day and am always amazed at how much better I feel after.
